Valtellina Wines & Traditional Products

Valtellina , Alpine valley of the upper Adda River, c.75 mi (120 km) long, in Lombardy, North Italy, extending from Lake Como to the Stelvio Pass. The main towns are Sondrio and Tirano. The valley is a fertile agricultural region, known for its wine.

 

With the adjoining counties of Bormio and Chiavenna, the province of Sondrio also boasts further excellent local staples and gives visitors the possibility to taste them all year round. The itinerary of the wine and flavours of Valtellina and Valchiavenna develops across snow-covered mountains, green valleys across snow-covered mountains and green valleys, visiting winegrowers, farms, restaurants, holiday farms and wine shops, as well as local producers of honey, IGP bresaola, DOP cheeses, apples and further tasty local staples.

 

The food and wine itinerary of the province of Sondrio gathers small and intimate resorts, such as Chiavenna, situated just in the heart of the homonymous valley, a renowned centre for the production of salami and cold pork meat and IGP Bresaola, Val Gerola and Val Albaredo, famous since the ancient times for the production of Bitto cheese, Valtartano and Val di Mello, appreciated for the production of Patalos cheese, which is matured in red wine. Not to be missed is the famous Valtellina Casera cheese. Teglio, the homeland of buckwheat, offers the lovers of homemade pasta, the Pizzoccheri, wide tagliatelle pasta served with potatoes, spinach and Bitto cheese.

 

 

 

 

 Golden Delicious Apples
Terziere di Mezzo, on the way back to Sondrio, is carpeted with thick apple orchards which produce Golden Delicious and Stark Delicious apples, while the nearby Valmalenco gathers the major producers of honey of Lombardy, whose production divides in three categories: Multifloreale di Montagna (produced at an altitude comprised between 200 and 1000 metres), Multifloreale di alta montagna (produced at an altitude of 1000 metres) and Monofloreale di rododendro.

     
 

 Mushrooms
The mushrooms are a real passion for the people of Valtellina and tourists who visit these valleys. They not only represent an ingredient that enriches many delicious traditional recipes, but the starting point for long walks in the woods of the hillside and source of pride for those who are found in large quantities.
In the Valtellina area grow different kinds, among which we mention the yellow or chanterelles and drum sticks, but the principal, or the tastiest and most valuable, is certainly the porcino mushroom, with its intense aroma and its unique taste.

     
 

 Dairy Products
From Valtellina mountain pastures and from a long tradition of cheese production, the celebrated cheese Bitto and Casera along with a wide range of products keeps tastes and flavours of their valley! Livigno and Trepalle barns, located at around 1900m. has the brand HIGH QUALITY for dairy products: Milk, Butter, Yougurt, ricotta Cheeses and home-made ice cream.
Bitto and Casera cheeses perfectly combine with the great wines of the Valtellina.

     
 

 Delicatessen


    • Bisciöla, a rural type of cake with walnuts, figs and raisins served with a vanilla sauce or Braulio, the famous digestive after-dinner drink of the Valtellina. Ideal cake to take home as a souvenir and memory of the flavours of a special holiday.
    • Pizzoccheri, a type of tagliatelle, a flat ribbon pasta, made with 80% buckwheat flour and 20% wheat flour and served with potatoes, spinach and Bitto cheese.
     
 

 Bresaola


    • Bresaola one of the symbolic products of the Valtellina, obtained through the method of preserving meat by salting and drying.
    • Goat “Violino”, seasoned and smoked ham made from the thigh or shoulder of goat.
